I realize I only use this blog when someone is in the hospital. I need to change that (some day). Scotty goes in for his surgery tomorrow morning. It is a valgus femoral osteotomy to his left hip/femur which will help straighten the leg and improve his stride and balance (see video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7rCjHc2IjI). I will post updates as we get information.
Dad is doing much better and looks to get out of the hospital and into a rehab facility early next week. They are just waiting for his Cumadin levels to increase. He is more active and alert and eager to get stronger. His spirits are good and he is thinking about where to go next after rehab. He is still having trouble coughing and clearing is throat but the doctors think he is fine for now and that they will follow his progress and see if anything needs to be done to his throat after he is out of the hospital. He can use his cell phone so feel free to give him a call at 617-835-5864.

PhilPhil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-67817556203487923312010-06-05T20:48:00.000-07:002010-06-05T20:53:45.152-07:00Dad - June 5Hi all,

Sorry for the lack of updates. Dad's recent improvement has been very gradual but steady. Helen is with him and says that he was restless today, but in a good way. He wants to get out of the ICU and into a rehab facility. We believe we have found the right place and hope to get him there in the next couple of days. He is mostly off of the respirator and is set up with a web cam in case anyone wants to Skype with him (paul.polishuk). Dad still needs to gain more strength and stamina, but he seems up to the challenge. Thanks to everyone for their love and support over the past few weeks.

PhilPhil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-48593889595361803232010-05-31T13:41:00.000-07:002010-06-01T07:49:47.486-07:00Dad - May 31

Hi all - Dad continues to progress and get better. He had a thracheostomy on Friday so that they could take out his breathing tube. He now connects to the ventilator through the tube in his throat. We hope this is a short term solution and that he won't need it longer. He was sitting up today and is relying on the ventilator less and less. Paul is looking at rehab facilities in Houston today. Hopefully we can get him out of the hospital soon. Helen arrives on Weds for the next shift.

Phil
Phil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-62636866048312280492010-05-28T06:04:00.000-07:002010-05-28T06:09:29.596-07:00Dad - May 27Good progress yesterday. They stopped his sedation so that he could breath with less help from the respirator and could wake up and recognize people (like me!). He is still groggy and tired, but was able to understand questions and respond (non-verbally). Hoepfully he had a good night and they will remove the breathing tube today. They still need to solve the problem of secretions in his throat and lungs, which may be caused by nerve damage to his throat but we won't know until they can remove the breathing tube. I hope to post another update from the airport this afternoon. Paul arrives tomorrow for the weekend and Helen follows next week. Have a great holiday weekend and send healing thoughts Dad's way.

PhilPhil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-78181190920732229492010-05-27T07:34:00.000-07:002010-05-27T07:38:02.774-07:00Dad - May 26Hi all. Dad continues to rest and is stable in the ICU. His lungs are slowly getting better and the doctors hope to be able to take out the breathing tube in the next couple of days. The good news is that his kidneys continue to function well enough to not need dialysis. I hope to have more good news to report later today.

PhilPhil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-10733338325059637672010-05-25T12:40:00.000-07:002010-05-25T12:52:13.034-07:00Update on Dad: Tuesday, May 25Hi all. This week is my shift in Houston with my Dad. He is currently in the ICU, on a respirator and sedated. He has some fluid in his lungs that they need to clear before the respirator can be removed. We are hopeful that will happen in the next 24 hours. His kidneys seem to be slowly coming back and there is hope they will regain full function over time.

For those who may not know, dad had surgery two weeks ago in Houston for an aortic aneuryism. The surgery went well from a cardiac perspective, but there were two complications. One is the functioning of his kidneys. They weren't working right away but it looks like they may come back. The other is paralysis in his legs. Unfortunately it doesn't look like that will come back. Dad has been incredibly strong about this and is eager to get on with the next phase of his life. We just need to get him healthy and out of hospital so he can begin the rehabilitation process.

Thanks to all of you for your love and support. I will continue to provide updates as frequently as I can, but feel free to send emails or call. I would love to hear from you.

Thanks,

PhilPhil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-81366979568275300032010-04-15T11:35:00.000-07:002010-04-15T13:42:43.440-07:00Update on Scott: His Left Hip

Hi all. It has been way too long since our last posting. Unfortunately it seems the right time to post is when we come back from the Doctor or hospital :( Since the last posting Scott has been doing great and growing into a fun and happy little boy. He started walking at 14 months and is quite a destructive force. He likes to flip thing over and toss them out of his way. However, we noticed a little hitch in his step and was not as stable as he should. We finally got an xray on his hip and it showed a difference in development from the right one. His doctor wanted to get more detail so he scheduled an arthogram.

Scott had the arthogram on his hip this morning (xrays with dye for better contrast - requires general anesthesia). The test went well and Scott was a trooper. The test confirmed the doctor's suspicion that Scott has a misformed left hip socket and ball (top of femur). This was likely caused by lack of blood flow when Scott had his infection in the hospital after his heart surgery. His cartilage and everything else looks good. The doctor's opinion is that nothing should be done now, monitor Scott every 6-12 months going forward and then do surgery to correct the problem when he is much older - like 12! There should be no pain associated with the hip, but he will likely have a limp. We will just have to see how severe it is and how much it restricts his mobility and activity.

While Scott was anethesized during the test the doctor noticed that one of the tendons to that hip was very tight (as is common with this type of issue) so he cut the tendon to loosen it and reattached it. We hope this relieves some pressure on the hip and gives Scott greater mobility. We'll see what happens over the coming days and weeks.

The silver lining is that we won't have to deal with a cast any time soon.

Hope all is well with all of you,

Phil, Mindy, Will and Scott
Phil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-7381572012862855862009-08-13T08:25:00.000-07:002009-08-13T08:30:00.035-07:00Brotherly Love
As you can see from the photo, Scotty is quite enamored with his big brother. He also has 2 bottom teeth which came in a couple of weeks ago. It would be nice if he was showing more interest in eating solids. He is still gaining good weight because he loves his milk but we are working with an occupational therapist who specializes in feeding issues to help him get better at taking solid food. He is showing some progress albeit very slow. We just keep trying....

Phil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-10941605208001426892009-07-08T13:10:00.000-07:002009-07-08T13:22:22.329-07:00
This close-up of Scott was taken in mid-June by Mindy's cousin Molly. We have been a little busy and sleep deprived. However, we will take this any day over going to the hospital for hours every day. Scott continues to grow and prosper. He is almost 10 pounds and has not had the feeding tube for almost 2 weeks. At the suggestion of home nurse we started feeding Scott on his side and it has made all the difference. He is much more relaxed and can better pace himself. Rarely now does he not drink the entire bottle and it seems to be much more enjoyable for him (and us). His big brother is very loving and affectionate towards Scott. We'll see if that continues when Scott is old enough to steal his toys.

Mindy's mom was here for a week around Thanksgiving and was a tremendous help. We even were able to go to the movies one afternoon. We will be here for Christmas as well, but are contemplating a drive to Long Beach for New Years. Thanks again to all for your support during the past few months. We are grateful to have such great friends and family. The course of IV antibiotics is finished. An upper GI test was normal. Oh, and his heart is just fine. Now we just need to get him off the feeding tube, but that's a nice problem to have. We now trade trips to the hospital for sleepless nights, but are happy about it.

We want to thank everyone for all their love and support during the past few months. Sorry about the delay between postings. Scott's schedule has become fairly routine and normal - eat, sleep, poop repeat... His IV antibiotics finish today and after a few tests we hope to bring him home on Friday. He is still not getting enough food through the nipple or bottle so he will still have a feeding tube. We hope he won't need it for too long. We long for the normal routine of feeding, sleeping and changing without the monitoring lines and IV. Life in the hospital has gotten pretty old, especially for Mindy, who has spent many hours a day there making sure Scott gets what he needs. She has been amazing.

Hopefully our next post will be about life at home. Thanks again for all your support.

Phil, Mindy, Will and ScottPhil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-1610786247036768912008-11-02T13:39:00.000-08:002008-11-02T13:40:47.259-08:00Snuggle Bug

This photo was taken by Phil's brother about a week ago - Scott loves having his right hand up by his ear. At this point, Scott is very stable and basically in maintenance mode. His 6 week course of antibiotics will finish on November 11th, which is Will's birthday and 1 week after his original due date!

Right now we are just working on getting him to take his food orally (either by breast or by the bottle). We try to do 3 feedings each day (2 breast and 1 bottle) but he still needs to be supplemented with breast milk down his nasal feeding tube. We are hopeful that he will not need the feeding tube by the time he can be off the antibiotics. But he is gaining weight each day and today was just over 3 kilograms (6 pounds, 6 ounces). He's becoming quite the big boy compared to other preemies in the nursery!

Love,
Mindy (& Phil & Will)Phil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-72444602392395699312008-10-20T12:42:00.001-07:002008-10-20T20:20:45.581-07:00Photos

Phil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-21840740689373809942008-10-17T13:51:00.001-07:002008-10-17T13:56:21.910-07:00No news is good newsHi all. Sorry for taking so long getting a new post up. Basically all is going well and according to plan. Scott continues to eat well and increase his volume. He does a bit more with the bottle and breast every day. He now weighs almost 6 lbs. They took out his stitches today and there is no sign of infection. The biggest threat is him being snatched away by one of the nurses because he is so cute (photo to follow soon). Plan is for Scott to come home in either 2 or 4 weeks depending on his course of antibiotics. We are looking forward to that day. Dad and Arlene are visiting this weekend and got to see him this morning. Thanks again for all your support. There are no signs of the infection flaring up. All recent cultures have been negative and his wound site looks clean. His feeding has increased to 50 ml every 3 hours and Mindy has started to introduce the breast but we think it will take some time before he is ready for that. He is now a whopping 5 lbs 5 ozs! His breathing is stable but still a little fast for our liking, but that seems to be normal for a preemie at this age. There are no signs of any heart problems (knock on wood). We will upload more pictures soon. All the nurses think he is adorable. Of course we do too but we are biased. Will draws pictures at preschool for Scott and we hang them on the wall next to his crib. Thanks again for all your support. Sorry about the delay in postings. Things have been pretty uneventful, which is very good. Scott continues to eat well (not exactly eating, but at least digesting all the milk that is fed to him through a tube). His breathing had gotten faster so they put him back in the CPAP device (to help expand his lungs - see picture) and it seems to have helped. So much so that they took him off of it after two days. Now he is back on the nasal canula and is basically breathing on his own.

He has moved into crib so it feels like he closer to being normal. He is getting bigger every day and is even wearing real onsies, although they are way too big for him.

The doctors are evaluating whether at some point they can change his antibiotic to one that can be taken orally, which could allow us to go home sooner. It's not certain, but a nice thing to hope for.

Thanks again for all your support and prayers. We really appreciate it all.

Phil, Mindy, Will & Scott

Phil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6118157231644132002.post-60645910374817291162008-10-06T07:54:00.001-07:002008-10-06T08:12:25.473-07:00Update from the WeekendThe weekend in the NICU was pretty uneventful which is a good thing. Scott continues to go up in his feedings and by this morning should be up to full feeds based on his weight. His breathing was still a bit faster than the doctors were comfortable with so he is now back on the nasal CPAP. It definitely helped as his respiratory rate did come down. I think they will see how he does for a few days and then try weening him back to a nasal cannula. The nurses also wanted to try nipple feeding over the weekend (first with the bottle and then moving to the breast) but didn't feel comfortable with his high respiratory rate. Maybe we can try once he's back on the nasal cannula.

My mom was in town this weekend and got to hold Scott for the first time which of course she loved! He also was finally able to be swaddled which he really liked - our little burrito boy!

Thanks again for all your good thoughts - hope everyone is doing well.

-MindyPhil P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16618292812251134178noreply@blogger.com4
